Los Angeles breastfeeding moms will meet on June 10th from 1-4pm at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for an event named LActravaganza.

Katie Hamilton, the organizer of this event, visited LACMA on May 5, 2012 where she was asked to cover herself while nursing her 21 month old daughter. Katie cited her state law allowing her to nurse in public and was surprised that another patron of the museum would have complained considering the nudity and bare breasts depicted in several pieces of art throughout the museum.

LACMA issued a prompt public apology to Katie and has vowed to educate it’s employees according to California state law and a woman’s legal right to nurse in public to prevent further occurrences.

Katie’s nursing in public incident has motivated the nursing mom to encourage local support for breastfeeding moms. You can follow her efforts to normalize nursing in Los Angeles on her Facebook group Hey LA! Breastfeeding Isn’t Shameful.

LActravaganza organizers report that–this event is a celebration of mothers and babies, an effort to normalize nursing, and that LACMA has approved the event being held at the museum.
